Notice: Total fire ban in effect for the Village of Birchbay until further notice. Open-air burning, including campfires, is prohibited. Read the notice

Permits & Licences

Building permits, burn permits, dog tags, and everything that needs a signature.

Building permits

A building permit is required for most construction, including decks over 10 m², sheds over 15 m², additions, and structural renovations. The Village contracts building inspection through the County Chief Building Official.

Before you build: contact the Municipal Office for a pre-consultation — ten minutes on the phone can save weeks of back-and-forth. Waterfront properties may also require shoreline alteration approval from the Conservation Authority.

Burn permits

Open-air burning requires a permit from April 1 to October 31. Permits are free, valid for the season, and can be requested at the Municipal Office.

Note: all burn permits are suspended while a fire ban is in effect. Check the banner on this website or call the burn line: 613-555-0178.

Dog tags

All dogs in the Village must be licensed annually. Tags are $20 ($15 for spayed/neutered) and available at the Municipal Office. Tag revenue supports the animal control contract.

Lottery & special event licences

Charitable lottery licences (raffles, bingos, break-open tickets) and special event permits for road closures or use of municipal property are issued through the Clerk's office — allow 30 days for special events.
